Thanks Maxine The IGI shows his parents as John and Hannah (Nee Walker) John was born 1858 Baptised 17th April 1858 in Rawcliffe near Goole. His sister Mary Ann Gray was born 1856/57 in Rawcliffe. James married Alice Elwiss (Elvidge) in 1877 in Goole. He has one son John William Elwiss Gray B.O.B. 1880 I don't know whether this will help Jane

Hi Jane Have you had a look on 1837 online? It is possible they could be different people, the marriage cert doesn't mention the mother so it would be difficult to check. If you can find a census entry that might help. If you post up some for details , e.g. names of both parents, siblings , dates of birth, place of birth , I'll have a look and see what I can find, and I'm sure someone else may be able to look at 1861/1871 census for you (I don't have them) Regards Maxine

I believe that the father mentioned on James Grays marriage certificate may not be his biological father. How can i find out if this is the case. I can't find his birth certificate anywhere. There is an entry for James Gray in Goole at the right time (1858) but the father's name is different. Can anyone give me some suggestions. Many thanks Jane
