Thanks to everyone who replied. My "working jeweller" originally lived in Manchester, then appears to have moved to London where 2 of his children were christened (although they were born in Manchester). Another child was born in Chapel En Le Frith, and some time after his death, his widow was back in Manchester for the 1881 census.

Hi Thanks Shirley will give it a go. Tried the historical directories site and it was OK on my computer. I have however had problems in the past. I think it gets a bit touchy at times but it is worth keeping at it. Karen

Hi Just visited the site and they only offer their own tracing services. There are some online trade directories at www . historicaldirectories . org remove the spaces. A branch of my family were jewellers in B'ham but I am having trouble pinpointing them at the moment. If you do look at the trade directories also look for related occupations like brass pattern chaser which I believe to be the old name for an engraver, whitesmith is also a possible as they dealt in white metals ie platinum & silver. carol there is a website called w w w . a c h i e v e m e n t s . c o . u k which apparently has trade directories for trades and people during 19th centure with millions of named individuals, dont know if this is a free site or not but might be worth a look hevi

Does anybody have a clue what a "working jeweller" was? I am okay with the "jeweller" bit! but don't quite understand what the "working" bit means, unless it is the obvious and he wasn't unemployed. I have just received a birth certificate, with this as the fathers occupation. Many years later, on his daughters wedding certificate, he is just listed as "jeweller" deceased. Thanks. Carol
