Hello Elaine. A bit of information for you which you may find useful. Berengaria was a sailing ship of 1318 tons, (quite large). She was registered at Greenock and owned by a John Hendry also of Greenock. She was built in Glasgow in 1874. Hope this is useful. Keith |

Hello Eileen. Sorry for the delay in replying. Have looked at every Hamson entry on the 1837online site from 1881 to 1885. No luck. When men died or were lost at sea the death was registered by the Ship's Master at the first Port of Call afterwards. My Wife's great Grandfather for example died on the way from Newfoundland and his death was registered in Castletownbearhaven in Southern Ireland, then part of the UK. As William Hamson was on the Berengeria of Greenock it is possible his death was registered in Scotland when the ship returned there. Sorry I can't be of any more help |

On the NationalArchivist died at sea site there is a death for Hamson 1883-87 but the initial is P. You need credits to research further. But you may have already tried this? |

I have been trying to find a relly who died at sea, he was on the 1881 census his wife remarried in 1885 the children put into the naval orphange between 1885 and 1891. I have been to the FRC and checked the deaths for these dates and more, he is not there! did the wife have to prove that the husband had died before placing the kids in care or not! I have paid a researcher but he cmae up with a blank from Kew, its funny really because someone he did service with married into the family he also 'disappears' about the same time. Where do i go next!!! thanks in advance for your comments Eileen |
