Hi, Im sure you all already know the answer to this question! Im trying to find the birth certifcate of my Ggrandad. i have his wedding cerificate and his age then was 22 at 23-1-1916. So i reckon he was born around 1894. His name is George Scott and I am quite sure he was born in West Ham, London or somewhere in London. Any help where to search next as I am new to the searching? thank you.

Keely If you click on links (on the left hand side of this page) and then go to FreeBMD, the indexes which list births, deaths, marriages are currently being transcribed. The indexes will give volume & page nos which you can use to order certificates. You can search using names etc for a wide range of years. Just a warning though, I think that they are experiencing "technical difficulties" at the moment so it might be worth waiting a day or so before you try! Also the website is not complete so even if you don't find him, if you wait until next month when the site is updated again, he may well turn up! Once you have found him, again using the links bit, if you go to 1837 online, you can double check that you have the correct volume & page nos by seaching for the same qtr and surname that you found him on in the FreeBMD site. The 1837 site also has a direct link to the ONS site, in which you can order birth certificates etc, using the reference nos that you have found. I hope this makes sense, if not I'm really sorry for confusing you! Rachel

Thanks for your help Rachel! I did look on the freebmd but couldnt find anything. I will take your advice and wait for another month. I think where I am new to all this, I am a bit all over at the moment until I get a hand of the basic research!

I found two possibilities on the 1901 census , if you give me his fathers name & occupation I'll narrow it down for you. George

Keely You can skip the FreeBMD site and go directly to the 1837 site, but if you don't know the exact qtr, it can prove expensive! The searches are based on the first three letters of the surname ie SCO for Scott, and so you will quite often find yourself wading through pages and pages of names. I tried this for one of my elusive rellies births from c1843 and just could not find him! It didn't help that the pages were handwritten and held a lot less names than later typed pages! Hi Keely I have just checked on freebmd and there are a few george scotts on there I typed in his name and 1890 to 1900 and it came up with about 5 or 6 for west ham 2 of those was 1894 so why not take a look hope this helps. Debbie

This looks like your family James Scott,56,b Scotland,Stoker on Ship Elizabeth,54,wife,b Birmingham Charles,14 Catherine,10 Elizabeth,16 Lavinia,4 George,7 Margaret,1 All children born West Ham. Family were living in West Ham. Hope it helps George

Thankx Georgina! I think that is them! Because I know he had a brother called Charles! I just him on the freebmd using Debra's search method too!! Did you find that information fromt he census because i looked on there and couldnt find a match as good as that! There was one possibity but I wasnt 100%. Thanks everyone for you help and time!
