Am I right in assuming if I input the ancestors name in the 1901 search, and the answer comes up not found that the individual was not in the country on cnsus night? Been searching for my grandfather on that night - thought he might be in Barracks (thanks to GC members found the address) but nothing came up. Can I assume he was on HM business that night possibly in South Africa in the Boar War???? He is one elusive man. Opinions please - Jacqui

You could try different spellings of the surname. I'd assumed some of my relations to be dead because I couldn't find them on the census although I couldn't find deaths for them. Other people found them for me - their names were spelt wrong!

Thanks for your response - his name was GEORGE WILLIAM SUTER aged 24 (born 1877 Gosport Hampshire). I have assumed he was a soldier in 1901 as I cannot find him after 1891 until 1914 when my own father was born and George William was shown as Batt.Sgt. Major Royal Horse Artillery. Unless he was abroad with the army I cannot think of any other reason why he would not have appeared on the 1901 census. Any help or suggestions gratefully received. Jacqui

Jacqui. There's a lot of George Souter's in the 1901 census. Could he be one of them? Janet

Thanks Janet and George - I'll take looks at both although Ihad looked at Souter, Sewter, Sewtar, Sutter et al. Never thought of Sloughter though - perhaps I oughta! Maybe he had a plum in his mouth when he gave his name!! Jacqui
