Thanks Pam and Rosemary, all I know for certain, is that they lived at 4, Jacob Street, Bermondsey in May 1870, as that is when George Henry Hersey was born. I don't know his fathers christian name and can only hope that his mother was Hannah. She was born in Little Bredy Dorset in 1838. She was widowed within the next few years and I don"t know where the family went to, so I"m afraid I'm not much help. Gill

Gillian, If any of the people you know the name and age of were alive in 1881 you could look them up in the 1881 census on family search (IGI)will potentialy give some clues (but people did fib to cenuss enumerators so sometimes this dosent help much) Pam

Don't worry, know what its like - sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees and need someone detached. I am very detached today .. XX

Birth certificate for children would give you mother's name and maiden name, age, address, father's name and occupation, place born etc. This would be the best place to start, then you can look for the marriage certificate and work back from there. HTH. Maz. XX

Has anyone any ideas on how I can trace a lady whose maiden name I don't know? I know her christian name, her year and place of birth ( a small village in Dorset) I also know her married surname, but not her husbands christian name,I know where and when her children were born, but not where or when she was married! Is there any hope? Gill
