Don't rely too much on family memory. My sister, who is 5 years older than me, and I think now the senior member of our family, has told me an awful lot that she remembers that has proved to be totally wrong. Names, places, dates, all remembered wrongly. Jan

Hi Jan Well thats quite a theory that bears looking into a bit further.Family history says that he was definitely the child of my gggrandmother, however we all know how reliable some of that history can be! As his daughter was illegitimate and brought up by his 'parents' until they adopted her at 15 i think they would have said if he was also adopted but as i am unable at present to locate a record for him on family search i will bear your idea in mind and investigate further. Thanks Yvette

Perhaps John was adopted? If the boy's parents were relatives of the father, perhaps he was shipped back to be with him after the parents died. Have you tried Family Search to see if you can find a record of his birth, which might give his parents' names? Jan.

My gggrandparents lived in Croydon, and ran a greengrocers, they had 4 of their 5 children in and around Croydon, but John (3rd child)was born in Chile So America,in 1897, how can i find out why he was born so far from home? I would be very grateful for any ideas on where to start looking on this. Thankyou Yvette
