190l census decoder-coloured blocks?

As far as I can make out if you group by person then consecutive numbers will be coloured blue, grey, yellow etc. An entry on its own will stay white but may seem to be in a group if you have several single entries, if you see what I mean. If you group by page, then all entries on the same page will be in coloured bands, and single entries will stay white. You can get more than 1 household in the same band if they live close by cos they will be on the same page. Hope that helps.

Vera, My computer doesn't show a 'light beige' behind any of the processed lists that I can see on my screen from the 1901 decoder site. (Maybe it's my computer's colour settings?) However, when I print out the processed results DIRECT FROM THIS LIST I get some entries on yellow lines! Confusion reigns! Having checked my previous work from 1901 site I'm afraid I still can't make any sense of the colouring behind the entries. It doesn't seem to be as simple as 'households'. Thank you so much for your time - perhaps I'll see the light eventually! Kind regards - Pat

Patricia Sorry - I haven't used that 'Group by' before as I normally just click on the title at the top of the column to sort them (where it says Person ID, Page ID etc. I have just tried it out and it DOES sort out the family groups by either Page ID or Person ID. On my screen it shows different shades of grey, light beige and white rather than blue (that depends on the computer you are using and how the colours have been set). The households are grouped in coloured blocks as: the first is grey the next one is light beige, the next is white, then the sequence is started again with blocks of grey, light beige and white. If you look at the Person ID following the sequential numbers you will see the order. Hope I have explained it OK. Vera Manchester

Yes, I'm with you there Patricia. Even sorted by ID the blocks of colour contain more than one family group. I understand that these can be separated when Excel, but curiosity makes me wonder why this happens in the first place! Janet

Dear Vera I understand your explanation of what happens when the 'COLOURS' button is pressed. Thanks. However, the blue/white blocks that puzzle me are those which come up after the 'GROUP BY' (person ID) button is pressed. I know from experience of the decoder that these blocks contain MORE THAN ONE family group. Still in a quandry! Kind regards - Pat

Patricia et al If you click on the square at the top saying 'Colours' it will take off the alternative coloured rows. The coloured rows make it easier to read ! or so they say. When you have Saved to Excel and use the list on Excel you will be able to separate the family groups by adding a row in between them. Vera Manchester

If you sort by person ID then the family is grouped together in a bock of colour

Rodney No, they don't - that's the puzzling thing about it. Sometimes two or three different households are grouped together in a block of colour! Perhaps someone will know why. Janet

I Think the colours group together people in the households Rod

When I sort 1901 results by person ID I get white and blue blocks of entries. Can anyone tell me the significance of this? Some of the numbers within the blocks are consecutive, while others are not. I'm confused! Thanks for your help - Pat
