I have checked the Kaynames and can't find a match. Ah well! Walter Gabriel was born approx 1862 in Portsea (southsea or Portsmouth) in Hampshire. In 1889 he married Fanny Dorrington. They are on the 1901 census with their son. I'd appreciate it if anyone has any idea where he might be on the other censuses! Thanks! Regards, -Kat

Jane was born in 1831,,,I cant find the marriage but have got her death certificate in 1894 which shows John as still living. Hoping someone can wave the magic wand,,,

Max - I have searched for all the variants - from McKay to Mcgee...as they are all derivatives of the same scottish clan...but still nothing! Helen - I have searched the whole of the UK for 1881...including the RN section and there are no likely relatives. Trouble is that Jane Greeps husband was John Burns...and it is such a common name! Catherine - Walter Gabriel McKay's fathers name was GABRIEL MCKAY. There is one GABRIEL MCKAY living in Portsmouth (where walter was born) but Walter is not listed with his family! Thanks for replying all of you - if you think of anything else please let me know! Best Wishes, -Kat

You have probably done this already but have you checked the Royal Navy section of the 1881 Census which shows men aboard ships on Census night? You don't give your rellies name but there is a Joseph Greep listed on the 'Agincourt'.

In 1881 Jane Greep is living in eastney with her children. hey live in Royal Navy accommodation. Her husband is not listed in the household and I know that at that time he was in the RN or RMA. But he does not appear on the 1881 census or the 1891 census and he is dead before the 1901 census was conducted. I elieve that he died somewhere between 1881 and 1891 but cannot find his death cert as I do not know where he was born (though Devon is the most likely). I have his marriage cert and his childrens birth certs but nothing else. --- Another relative is: Walter Gabriel McKay. He was born in approx 1862 and married Fanny Louisa Durrington/Dorrington in 1889. In 1891 they had a daughter who died aged 1day and in 1898 they had a son. The daughter was named after the mother and the son after his dad. Walter and company appear on the 1901 census but nothing before then! Please help me find him - I have tried vainly and must be doing something wrong to loose him so many times! I have his marriage cert and his childrens birth certs but it is census info which would be most useful! Thank you for your time, -Kat

I have two ancestors who keep dodging censuses and wondered if anyone could suggest alternative routes....
