Thanks very much for this offer. I am stuck with gg grandmother Emily Gurr who was born in Brighton apparently in 1840. Cannot find a birth record anywhere. On her marriage certificate her father is named as Henry (Accountant). Would so much like to track down her mother and any siblings. If you could find any information at all I should be so grateful. Many thanks.

Hi Vanessa - I should be able to do your lookups on Sat so will e-mail you with any finds. Nina - Unfortunately it is only Bishops Transcripts and later censuses I can look up, sorry I can't help. Vanessa - I'll have a look. Brighton is split up into several different parishes, but we do have most of the BTs.

Thank you so much. She was married at St Nicholas, so might have been baptised there? And the address given then (1859) was 5 Belgrave Street. Hope this makes things easier!

Hi Vanessa. I've had a look in the Brighton Bts and have not found any Emily Gurr being born 1837 - 1841. It got a bit confusing as there were other Gurrs but also some Gunns and the writing made it a bit difficult to tell the two apart. There was an Emily of the right age on the 1851 Index but the father was called Edward not Henry. Here are the details: Edward Gurr Hd m 39 Painter and Glazer Born Heathfield Elizabeth Gurr wi m 41 Laundress Born Seaford Emily Gurr daug 11 Scholar Born Norwood Green, Surrey Ann Gurr daug 9 Scholar Born Brighton Eliza Gurr daug 5 Scholar Born Brighton. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help. Sue

Susan I wonder whether you were able to offer any information/help on the following? I am looking for Thomas and Jane Burgess who were living either in Hanover Terrace or Southover Street from about 1846 to 1860. This is in Brighton in the Parish of St. Nicholas not far from Old Steine. They are probably living with Jane's father - Charles Wood with at least one child Thomas, but would be interested in confirmation. Thank you in advance. Gary

Hi Gary I can check the 1851 census index for Brighton. Do you want me to check the Bishops Transcripts for any Baptisms? Sue

Gary

Gary Report 20 Sep 2003 16:18

Sue Thanks for going to check the 1851 census I look forward to your finds. I do not know the period the Bishops Transcripts cover but my Brighton interests are: Isaac Burgess born 07/12/1846 Thomas Burgess born 29/10/1848 Louisa Burgess born 31/07/1854 William Burgess born 12/08/1856 Jane Burgess born 21/09/1858 All children of Thomas and Jane Burgess If you can spot any other children between these dates that might have died young I would be interested. I assume Jane Burgess born Jane Wood would be in there as well, she was born in 1830. Thank you Gary

Gary I've looked at the Brighton 1851 census and found the following: 36 Hanover Square Charles Wood Hd m 56 Builders Lab Cowden Kent Sophia Wood Wf m 47 Laundress Banstead Surrey Mary A Wood d u 17 Laundress Brighton Charlotte Wood d 13 Nursemaid Brighton Caroline Wood d 16 Laundress Brighton Emma Wood d 7 Scholar Brighton Thomas Burgess gson 3 Scholar Brighton There was no sign of Thomas and Jane Burgess anywhere in the Brighton Index. The Bts for Brighton only go up to 1849 and I've only had a chance to check 1848 + 1849 so far - theres rather a lot of entries for Brigton. No sign of Thomas Burgess baptism. Will look further back next time I go. Sue

Sue Thank you for the information you are a star. Charles and Sophia Wood are my great great grandparents, I had Charles but not Sophia. Thomas is the son of Thomas and Jane and was born 29/10/1848 I would not expect him to be batised earlier, more than likely later, so I would not spend time on this. Interesting that Thomas is living with his grandparents. Thomas and Jane's next child was not born until 1854 in Brighton, they may have gone back to Thomas home in Cowden or wandered off somewhere else. Interesting that Charles Wood was born in Cowden. Thomas was born in Cowden and must have met Jane visiting relatives and went to Brighton. Sorry for the ramble, I am always trying to piece a story around small pieces of information. Thanks again. Gary
