Oh Jan!! If only we could invent a time machine and go back! It would save us a lot of money, time, frustration etc etc. What a lovely thought! I think I would also get them all to leave all their details or make them all promise to be in the same place at the time of census!! Where is "Doc" when you need him eh?? (From the "Back to the Future" films, just in case you were wondering!!)

Wow, Sally, thanks for that - if they have a son Robert and a daughter Mary A that may be the right one. Which means I definitely did send for the wrong marriage certificate. Bother, £7 wasted. Wonder how he went from Carpenter in 1851 to Cab Proprietor in 1881 though. I think I'll invent a time machine and go back and find out. Jan.

I think I've been trying to fit a square Pegg into a round hole - I think the sequence I worked out is right, I've just sent for the wrong certificate. And wasted £7!!! Jan.

Thanks to you all for trying to help. I didn't try one G, or with an S - I did find the ones in the 1891 but none was shown as Farmer. Had to laugh at the Butcher & Hairdresser one, that really amused me. Trouble is, he seems to be the most likely one. I'll keep on keeping on, as we always do. At least I know what my gt grandfather's father's name was, that had totally eluded me up till now. The other thing that made me thing the older Robert Pegg was the right one was that he was married to Mary Ann, and my gt. gt. grandmother was Mary Ann. Jan.

Jan, just adding to Rosemary's reply ... Corpusty is just down the road from Holt (in case you don't know Norfolk) Janet

Long message warning - I found my grandmother aged 12 living with her aunt and uncle. He, Robert Pegg, was a Cab Proprietor, born in 1840 in Holt, Norfolk. I found that Robert had a sister Mary Ann, who was my gt grandmother. In a search for their father I found one Robert Pegg born 1820, a Cab Proprietor born in Holt. Naturally assumed he was their father. Have now received my gt grandparents' marriage certificate, her father is William Pegg, Farmer. And no trace of him is to be found anywhere. I've tried Family Search, and I've tried Batch Numbers, but none of them turned up anything. Where do I go from now please? Jan
