Why baptised twice?

Anybody got any suggestions why one of my ancestors was baptised twice in four years in the same church by the same vicar? There is no mistake - the d.o.b. is given on both entries. The individual concerned is given as 'illigitimate'. On the second occasion (in 1862), three illigitimates (by different mothers) were baptised the same day. Was this perhaps the work of a 'Thunder & Glory' vicar intent on 'cleansing his flock?' Tony C.

Could it be different people with the same name? Many people lost children and renamed the next child with the same name, apparently it saved them having to get a new certificate too! Other than that, don't know!

I can only reiterate what Sarah says. It shows the value of 'killing off' your ancestors before you go any further. Saves going down the wrong line sometimes.

Sometimes they were half baptised soon after birth if they wern't expected to live, and then fully baptised at a later date. Ros

I was baptised twice, the first time was when I was 12 days old and then I was put into an orphanage and my adopted parents had me baptised in another church 7 yrs later.
