Thanks John I had thought of that- but not sure how to go about it - he doesn't appear to have died in the same qtr, or the one after - but presumably if he had been still born he wouldn't have shown up as a birth -would he? Does anyone know if there is a separate register for stillbirths? I think I have seen it mentioned on here a while back. Rosi

Rosi, Just a suggestion and it might confuse the issue, but try and find a death for tha child ie kill him off. If you can't then it makes a stronger case for it being yours

Thanks Janet; as you say I and J are remarkably similar- and what the...... whatever.! It's Sainthill Lindsey, b ,1846/7 in Marylebone (ish) I am trying to find the birth of! It don't really matter do it what his middle initial were! Thanks for your interest and help, Rosi

Regarding the query over the middle initial 'I' or 'J'? These two are remarkably similar when handwritten in the old style! It's quite possible that this is a transcription error. Janet (or should I say Ianet!)

Thanks Shelli that is encouraging. Family folklore has it that this mum had a particularly hard time having babies (seems that most did in those days) and maybe the babe was registered as male for similar reasons. I will order the cert, and hope! Rosi.

Ros just to add to the confusion, when my bro-in-law was born his mum had nervous breakdown and his dad was looking after him and his mum, so the birth got registered as baby Blackman. Not sure if it was ameneded at a later date, and this wasn't years ago was in early 70's. shelli

Rachel, I wonder that too! So I will order the cert and maybe iwill find out. i will specify who the parents have to be to make it 'mine' tho'! Certs seem to be taking an age to arrive recently. I ordered a batch more than 2 weeks ago and I was expecting them last Monday, some of the births arrived - but 3 of them were wrong as the parents were not as specified and have had to be returned. I am still awaiting the marriage ones - there must be quite a backlog building up - it may take some time to find out about this unnamed Lindsey Male! Rosi

Rosi I've always wondered what box 10 on a birth cetificate was for. It says "name entered after registration", maybe if a child was just down as "male/female" this box is filled in after the parents eventually decide on a name? If this is the case, then hopefully if you ordered the cert for the "male" you will also find out what they eventually called him. I'm not quite sure how this worked though? Was there a time limit before they had to decide on a name? Sorry if I've just added to the confusion! Rachel

Gwyneth - thankyou. I was not sure whether a Certificate would be issued for an un-named but had my fingers crossed. As per my message to Jan - this seems my best chance so far! At least it is the right district (I have found two previously unknown brothers born/registered there, and the right approx year. So maybe, just maybe.. Thanks, Rosi

Thanks Jan- that is the right chap- with a possible query over the middle initial - it was not an I - I am sure he was a Sainthill John ( I have the original marriage cert. for him and Mary Ann) - but nowhere can I find a birth for him - this unnamed chap is the closest I've come so far. Amazingly there is a Senthill Lindsey and a Sainthill Lindsey registered one after another in 1846 (1837 Online) but neither of them is mine - one was born in Islington and has the wrong parents, and the other in Bradninch Devon. I have checked the indexes fairtly thoroughly, from 1842 - 1850, but can find no other that comes close! Thanks again. Rosi

I have found an entry in 1837 Online for a Lindsey male born in 1845. in Marylebone I cannot find the birth registration for my Sainthill Lindsey, born <1846> in the same district (I think). It seems to me to be possible that this is one and the same person - or, as the child is unnamed, is it likely that he died at or soon after his birth, and therefore cannot be my ggrandfather? Will there actually be a cert. for this unnamed child- which will tell me his parents - which could be the proving factor? can anyone help - please? Rosi.
