Linda, fantastic! This is the first time that I have actually managed to place John with his parents. Thanks enormously for your persistence with this - I knew that the surname would be spelt wrong! - sorry for the confusion that I introduced! Thanks also to Rosemary and Sam. David

Thanks to you all for your help - even if you can't find them you are at least ruling out some options! Ann was born in Wigan. Found John in 1901 (aged 13) - surname misspelt as Callagham - living with his older brother (Patrick) and his wife at 9 Adelaide St, Wigan. Yes - it is possible that the family spent some time in Ireland -although I have no positive evidence of this. Also possible that Thomas/Ann had both died by 1891 (especially given that John was with his brother's family in 1901).

Hi David, I tried everything I can think of and can't find them. If you can give any more information such as where Ann was born (or other variations on the surname) I'll give it another go. Sam

I am so embarassed by this but I have provided the wrong year of birth for John - this should be ~1888 i.e. he would've been 2 or 3 at the time of the 1891 census! Sincere apologies for sending you down the wrong track! David

Linda, sometimes have seen surname spelt as Callagham (e.g. John in 1901 Census), Calligan, Callagan, along with more "obvious" misspellings! Thanks David

Linda - thanks very much for trying - generally a very elusive family and not at all compliant. (e.g. poor at registering births!) I presume that you spotted my spelling mistake (having warned others!) - should be CALLAGHAN. Thanks again. David

Looking for my great-grandfather JOHN CALLGHAN (b Wigan ~ 1879) in 1891 census. Probably living with Father: THOMAS Callaghan (Aged ~ 45) and Mother: ANN Callaghan (aged ~ 43) Thomas and Ann were living with their family in Wigan in 1881. [Note: Callaghan is often misspelt!) Really stuck on this one and would appreciate any help. Thanks David
