marriage certificates?????

Licences and Certificates are completely different!!! A licence was something you had to obtain BEFORE you married - I think if you didn't have Banns read, or if you married outside your parish - a certificate is something which is issued to everyone who marries AFTER the ceremony. It is what you sign at the service and what you apply for at the FRC or 1837 online. Hopefully someone else can clarify where to get copies of licences ... Maz. XX

A licence is what is issued before the marriage can take place - like having your banns read in church and applies to reg office and non CofE marriages. Getting married by special licence usually means that you are doing it quick for one reason or another. My parents got married by speical licence because they had found somewhere to live - although everyone assumed it was cos mum was expecting! I'm not aware that you can get copies of licences but you could try the register office for the area they got married in.

A special licence was often issued during the war. When the man would only have a few days leave. I know, because my parents did. My dad was in the RAF and was being posted overseas, and I wasn't born until 18 months after the marriage.

Hi Jane and Jennifer - I think Jennifer's explanation must be the right one, as my grt-grandparents were married by Licence (she's the one who was 8 months pregnant at the time of the wedding). I have never obtained a copy of the Licence but a copy marriage cert cost me £7. 00 Jacqui

Hi, I think there are the same although a License was on special request. One of my relatives had a special license to marry, we thought it was because she was too young to marry legally, this was not the case. In the end we have assumed it was cos she was already pregnant at the time she was married and that was why they had applied for a license to marry ... ??? I would like to kno wthe real reson for Licenses if someone knows for sure Jeni

Hi I know i must seem thick but are marriage certificates and licences the same thing? If different How much do copies of licences cost??? Jane
