Applying for Army Records

Hi, I'm trying to apply for the army records of my father-in-law, who served in WW2. I have today received the form from the Army Records Office, which states that I need to know his regiment and discharge date. I know his regiment, as it is noted on his marriage certificate, but I have no idea of a discharge date. It appears I can't go any further until I have this. Any ideas on how I might find out please?
