Hi I am trying to locate Frank and Elizabeth Butterworth who were living in the Barnsley area. They were married in 1868 but divorced at some point as he remarried in 1879. I am eager to find out whether they had any children. Possibly a look up on the 1871 census might give me some clues so does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might ascertain this info? Many thanks Helen

Hi, Does he say he was divorced on his marriage cert? Divorce was very rare for ordinary people in the 19th C. You can order the 1871 census at any LDS centre for a small fee. Hope this helps, Gwynne

Hi Gwynne Thank you very much for the advice - most appreciated! Yes, it does state he was the divorced husband of Elizabeth Butterworth, formerly Oxley, on his second marriage certificate - that is how I found out about her. I have also informed a distant relative that I have recently contacted and she has been researching this particular line for over twenty years and she had no idea either!! I wonder what the reason for divorce was - next quest!! Best wishes Helen
