Hi Anne I havent found your Robert but in the Vital Recs index There are the following entries for Helmsley Yorks who could possibly your ancestors Robert Garbutt bap 2 Jun 1752 father James Garbutt Robert Garbutt bap 1 Nov 1775 father James Garbutt Bren

Thank you Jan for the IGI explanation. When I clicked on batch, it went to a search screen, and I thought it had just gone back to the beginning. Of course, it never occurs to me, to read the help link.

Hi there Anne, I think the first thing I would do is to find a birth certificate of one of his children. You would then have his wife's maiden name, then I would try and find his Marriage. This would give you his age, occupation and details about his father and this would then make it much easier for you to go further back. It would also give you the same details about his wife. Go to Family Search, type in the name, select Birth, and put in year of birth, and see if the person is listed in the IGI, if so that will often give you parents' names, and sometimes siblings. If there is a Batch Number listed, click on that, in the new window that opens fill in just the surname, parents names if known, and the county you are searching. Any other children with the same surname christened in the same parish will be shown - if you have put in the parents' names, then they will be siblings of your person. Jan.

On the 1881 census of Cumberland my G/grandfather is listed Robert Garbutt age 44 born in Helmsley.N Yorks.Help! what is my next research step.Also anybody any ideas what the occupation of a comercial traveller covered in those days.All five children and a set of twins were born in different parts of the North West Good Luck to all Anne Thank you all, once again members who have helped
