i have read in several books about this and just wondered from you good people who know, what does it involve? do you jsut compile a database of every occurence of the name, or do you have to research trees for each one? just wondered as i may decide to do one on my family name of Hounsham in the future Julie Tebb

Some time ago I attempted to do a One Name study of the name Little, I ended up scrapping it and concentrated on my own family. It involves gathering info on every person with that particular surname who ever existed. Its hard work moreso if you are doing a common name like Little. Its easier if it is unusual. George

Hi Ros, I had a look, it didn't make it clear if you had to research or just compile a list (that bit would be easy!!!) I was wondering if anyone on here actually did one and could advise me! Julie T:)

Hi Julie - the one name studies I have looked at have all included the surname and the derivatives of that surname - different spellings etc. As we all know over the ages the spellings of surnames have changed sometimes from generation to generation, and I understand a full one-name study would include all of these names - what an enormous task eh? too much for me I'm afraid, I'm having enough trouble just searching for my ancestors with my own spelling. Good luckof you decide to do it though - rather you than me! Jacqui

One of the names I am researching has been the focus of a one name study. I can send you the email address of the person who did it as he may be able to help you get started and tell you what is involved. Jacky

We belong to the East Family History Society and it has been a fantastic help to us. They collect all the details that members send and have a database to assist members enquiries. Anne
