If like me you can't find someone on a census and think the transcriber may have written the name down wrong, try this : Go to FreeBMD put in your relatives name and at bottom tick phonetic seach names then click find. This will give you many different spellings of the surname you're searching for. It worked for me, hope it helps someone Shelli

Here's another one for the 1881 census If you think the surname is misspelt and you know the name of the head of the household and someone else, just put both those forenames in with a rough year of birth and county and leave the surname empty. Crista

If you use the kyeword search (can't remember what it is called on the 1881 Census program) instead of Person Search then it will show how many matches there are for the name and others beginning with those letters. So if you are looking for "BLOGGS" and have entered "BLOG" so far then it might show something like bloggs 100 blogs 1 blogworth 10 I am going from memory but it gives you the idea of what happens. Of course this only applies to the CD-ROM's and does not work on the online search. Using the keyworks search also has the advantage with counties like Lancashire that are split into two CD-ROM's that you can search any name with either CD-ROM in your PC. Martin
