I am at the desperate stage I am trying to find my gg grandmother Ellen O'Hanlon,40yrs,b Ireland and two of her daughters Catherine(Kate) c12yrs, Ellen (Minnie) 10yrs. A kind GC member emailed me all the O'hanlons and Hanlons which came up on the decoder but my three were not there. Catherine and Ellen junior were born in South Bank, Middlesbrough. I have even looked at the census image where husband Daniel and children Michael,Margaret and Elsie are recorded but again no luck. Any help appreciated George

Hi George It is possible that they were travelling on the night of the census, in which case they may have been missed completely. Have you tried the 1891? Regards Maxine

I've found them in 1891 & I881 but in 1901 I can only find half of the family-husband and three children. The wife and two other daughters one being my g grandmother are absent. I've even tried just doing first name searches with birth places but again no luck. I am well and truly stumped. George

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 7 Oct 2003 20:00

Hi, Might she have been visiting relatives? I have heard that there are mistakes in the index and sometimes all people in the household are listed under the same surname as the head of household even when the names are different. If you have the names of her relatives it may be worth searching their households. Or perhaps she had gone "home" to Ireland for a visit. I can't think of anything else, Gwynne

The only relative I know of is a niece called Bridget Daly,29yrs, b Ireland. In 1881 this niece was living with my gg grandparents, by 1891 she had disappeared. She was probably married in 1901 and I'm finding it impossible to find her as there are lots of Bridget Daly's b Ireland. I have pondered the possibility that they were in Ireland but why would she take her two middle daughters and leave her youngest Elsie at home?. I suppose it may always remain a mystery George
