I've had this situation too! I took it that they were seperated, divorce was too difficult! At least he had the good grace to wait until she died, before he married again. My Great Great grandfather had one bigamous marriage and then 'lived in sin' with 'wife' number 3!!! Steph

Maybe she was insane and he had her hidden away? I suppose he would have then taken agnes as his wife even if just in name?

Hi Everybody, can you help with this! I've found one of my rellies on 1881, Herbert Cartledge, says he's married but his wife isn't there. She was called Sarah Barton (they married in 1863). However there is a visitor by the name of Agnes Brown and her daughter Edith. By 1891 they are still at the same address in Congleton but Agnes is now his wife (supposedly) and there's three more kids! (still no Sarah). In 1901 there's another two kids. I found a death for a Sarah Cartlidge in 1897 in Congleton but i can't be sure it's her although it's a possibility. Herbert married Agnes in 1897 too which would be very close to Sarah's death. So what happened? Did Sarah die, did they separate or did they divorce. Or was he a bigamist to put a bit of excitement into it!! I don't know what a carry on. lol. Any advice. Tracey, Bolton
