Sorry Guys - misunderstood the question. When you download gedcom files from the LDS site, it will ask you to save them to disk, and you can either save it where it defaults to (in which case make a note) or yoiu can change it and save it to some where you are more familiar with e.g. my documents or desktop- somewhere you can easily find it again. Once it has downloaded, open up "Word" and do a file open, go to the place you have saved the file, and make sure that the file type box says "all files". Select your gedcom file and it should open. Regards Maxine

If you click on the batch number it will put that in the appropriate box for you and all you have to do is delete the christian name and hit search.

Anne On family search I don't bother with the gedcom part of it. Just click on the name of the people you want to see. Write down the batch number, then clear the names on the search page and just put in the surname you are looking for. Enter the batch number you have written down into the correct box and it will give you all of the baptisms and marriages of that name in that parish. Margaret

I don't know a lot more than you but I will try as you have not yet received any replies. Gedcom is a type of file. It is one of the filetypes used for recording information in the latter day saints site and in various family tree software programs and is one that allows transfer between different programs. For instance - I loaded my family tree into this site from a program that stores its files as Gedcom. However, I have never yet succeeded in downloading a file from LDS! I have found it much quicker just to write the details down. Once you have found the information, you can click on underlines names and it and it will bring up the full info includinng the batch number. You can then do a new search using the batch number - but it will only give you details of other names of marriages of that parish at about that time - which you probably wont want anyway - more useful if you are looking for siblings. Hope this helps - if not maybe someone with more knowledge will reply Sylvie
