My great great grandfather was Walter Hague and he is listed on his son's marriage certificate in 1898 as deceased but his profession was Tallow Merchant. What did that mean? Cant find him with a son Frederick or Fred anywhere on the 1891 or 1881 census. Can anyoone help me please. Thanks Fiona who has hit a brickwall!!

Tallow was the hard white fat of cattle, sheep, horses etc. It was cut into small pieces and boiled or steamed. The result was sold on, either by the abattoirs or by merchants who bought it from them, to make soaps and candles. Amazing what we wash with !!!!!!!!! Paul

Hey, thanks that was quick. Can anyone find my Walter Hague please with a son Frederick in either 1891 or 1881. Frederick married in Kensington in 1898.

Had a quick look about, but can only find one Walter who MIGHT suit your research. But it does not mention a Frederick or Fred. It does state that he is a merchant, but it is in the North of England. Does it give an age on the marriage cert, as there are numerous Freds etc on the LDS site. A bit of confused logic here. Taking Fred's age as 21 at marriage, and that he was the eldest, it makes his DOB c1877/8. Taking his father's age at marriage as 21, I trawled through the FreeBMD Deaths that are recorded and came up with a list as follows:- Deaths Dec 1889 Haigh Walter 52 Wakefield 9c 58 Deaths Mar 1891 Haigh Walter 43 Huddersfield 9a 271 Deaths Jun 1891 Haigh Walter 77 Wortley 9c 2[06]9 HAIGH Walter 77 Wortley 9c 269 Deaths Mar 1892 Hague Walter 55 Sheffield 9c 299 Deaths Jun 1892 Haigh Walter 44 Wortley 9c 167 Deaths Mar 1894 HAGUE Walter 47 Sheffield 9c 293 HAIGH Walter 43 Huddersfield 9a 257 HAIGH Walter 37 Huddersfield 9a 207 Deaths Dec 1896 Haigh Walter 42 Dewsbury 9b 401 Hope it means something to you

Paul, March 1892 looks very possible. Might just order that one. Thanks for all your help. Fiona
