You need to try and get a copy of your father's birth certificate. You can order it on-line if born in UK. This should give you mother's maiden name.

PLEASE HELP, HAVE JUST STARTED MY SEARCH AND HAVE FALLEN AT THE FIRST FENCE, I HAVE LOCATED MY FATHERS BIRTH ENTRY, BUT NO MAIDEN NAME FOR HIS MOTHER.WHERE CAN I LOOK NOW?
