I think I read something like that too! Still, as you say, worth a try! Many thanks.

Hi Helen, Ernest age was unclear. I was trying to let you know I wasn't sure if it said 4 or 11, sorry. I don't know much about adoption, but seem to recall reading a thread on here that said legal adoptions weren't introduced until about 1920's or so. You could try posting the question, someone's bound to know the answer! Debbie

Thank-you, Debbie, This must be them. So I was right about little Ernest! I wonder if he was legally adopted? He would have been 11 so what does the '4' refer to, I wonder? Thanks once again - a mystery almost solved!!!!

Thanks for coming to my help, Debbie. John was born in Colwick, Staffs and would be about 54 in 1891; his job was Machine Wheel Fitter. Ann was born in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, and would be about 50. Guess they moved to Derby. Thank-you!

Hi Helen, Need a bit more I'm afraid. Approx ages? Were they born in Derbyshire or just living in Derbys. Debbie

Could some kind person please find for me John and Ann Middleton, Derby, on the 1891 census? Their likely children are John and Ernest, possibly others. Thank-you!!!
