Can't sleep, can't work, can't look after family, looking for Matthew Davis. "Doing my head in". Has anybody got any ideas or help. According to 1891 & 1901 census born in chester, cheshire c 1856. Can't find on cheshire BMD or 1837 online Births Deaths or marriages. Cheshire archives office can't help unless I can look personally or pay a researcher to search for me. Any ideas i may have overlooked would be appreciated

It is possible he is not on the GRO as he may not be registered. A baptism record may be what you need but that would still require a visit or some help from LDS. Strange thing is I can't find on 1881 or 1901 a Matthew Davies born in Chester. A couple on Shropshire and in 1901 just one aged 46 but that is Glamorgan. Perhaps someone else can help? John

Thanks for your replies. Matthew Davis was married to sarah anne ford. Ive got the census detail from 1901 & 1891. The Richmond 1881 detail I have picked up and think it could be him but how do I prove it???? Did house painters move around the country?? Also the other funny thing is that I think I might have a marriage certificate between a Mathew davis and Sarah ann ford but married in Loughborough Why???? On the 1901 census she was from Ecton Northants and on 1891 she was from Stamford. Then they had childred in Stamford Northants (Then) and moved to Kettering Northants

The discrepany in birthplace within a county is often because sometimes they name the actual village where they were born, or the nearest town, and sometimes the registration district. That's why the town named on BMD is often different from that named on the census forms. I've found a load of Mathew Davis/Davies born in Shropshire, but none in Cheshire. When I'm doing a search, I try to find the person using the information given. If that doesn't work, then I gradually delete what I think are facts, just in case they are wrong. So if Cheshire is near to Shropshire (my geography is terrible) you might like to consider that. Jan.
