I have just recieved a copy of my great grandparents marriage certificate, I have entered the information onto my tree but what is the marriage certificate reference. I am porbably asking a stupid question but I realy don't know Thanks Michelle |

If you are using it for a source list, the GRO reference makes sense, as anyone looking at it in later years will know exactly where to go. If you buy certificates from the local register office, the numbers will be different, and people will need to know if it is a local number or a GRO number, and if a local number, which office. The number in the top right, or sometimes at the bottom is just the blank certificate number, as it comes off the pad. |

Michelle, do you ever find that your surname gets spelt in a multitude of different ways? I knew 2 sisters who had other sisters, and the name was spelt differently on each certificate. |
