Hi Thanks Georgina but that's not the right John Oakley. I believe he was born in Kent and his wife Clara was born in Madeira, Brit subject. They had at least 3 daughter Mary Dorothea Katherine Lucy Violet Emma Clara Margaret all found on IGI with John and Clara as parents birth and christening dates So far none of the boys have been found by me on the 1881 or IGI but I live in hope. I have Frank Page Oakley and Marion Coventry's wedding cert and one of the witnesses was his mother Clara. John died in 1890. The search goes on....

Hi Michelle. If you think he was over the age of 20 in 1901, have you tried looking for his father John (or his brother) on the 1881 census? Maybe that will reveal a boy with a name begining with E...

Thanks for yet more suggestions. Yes they were from a religious family, the father, John, was a Clerk in Holy Orders and I have come across a Roland Oakley who was a "priest in the Church of England" in the 1901. One of the other Oakley's in the picture is an R. Oakley.

Michele Have you considered that you may not be able to find him on the 1901 census as he was fighting in the boar war. My grandmother's brother is missing. I know he wasn't dead as he was still alive when I was small. I remember him. Margaret
