Pat and Siobhan, thank you so much for helping me out. I'll check Samuels and see if I can come up with anything as well. I learned a lot from you both today, it's given me a lot of leads to go on as well as neat pictures to look at! Thank you again, you've been absolutely great! Amanda

Hi Amanda Unfortunatly there are that many companies that it could be. But Samuels the jewellers have been manaufacturing in brum for many years, this is a strong contender, but it is so hard unfortunatly to come up with a definate match. The best option for you is to contact a Warwickshire look up group that will be able to help you with your quest maybe they can check electral rolls for the surrounding streets and come up with some company names, Good luck with your search. Regards Pat

Hmmm, I see it. Looks kind of far from where he may have lived, unless he lived at the end of Whitehall. I'm going to contact the people at Digital Handsworth to see if they know how to contact anyone that might have staff records for Soho Works. See if we can nail old Georgie down. Thanks Siobhan!

if you go to the link i gave you and then click on the link for the map from that page, you will see soho road, whitehall road is just north of it, so if you use the north arrow to scroll up the map you will see where whitehall road is in reference to it

Thanks for the link Siobhan. I checked it out on the search engine, no visible way of finding out if he worked there but I'll keep trying. Any other places I might try? Did you come up with any names, Pat? I really appreciate both of you helping me out with this. Since I'm in Canada I'm a little lost when it comes to all things Brum. Major kudos to you both.

Soho Works, I'll check that out. Wonder what they made there? Thanks Siobhan! And thanks Pat for that picture, I printed it off. Funny, it's not how I pictured their houses would look!

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 19 Oct 2003 22:18

pretty likely it was the Soho Works, this was located right off of Whitehall Road.

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 19 Oct 2003 22:07

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 19 Oct 2003 21:57

Amanda Report 19 Oct 2003 21:50

Pat, that's fab! I'll check it out. Siobhan, don't think anyone worked there, but I'll ask my mum. Could be possible, not really sure where granny worked.

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 19 Oct 2003 21:42

Sorry Pat, that's about the extent of my info. It was on Whitehall Rd, almost directly across from where they lived. I wish I knew what number they lived at, but I don't. All that knew are gone, and anyone that might have remembered doesn't anymore. He was a foreman, so I'm assuming it was a fair sized establishment. Didn't come up with much on the search engines. Oh, please don't let this be another roadblock! It took me ages to get over the last one!

Patricia

Patricia Report 19 Oct 2003 21:02

There were many big factories in that location that specialised in precious metals, have you got anymore info ??

Amanda

Amanda Report 19 Oct 2003 20:56

Siobhan, I'm so glad to hear you're feeling better. Too bad about the inner ear infection, though. They're rotten. Pat, any big factories on that road that you know of? I'll try searching Silversmiths, Handsworth to see if I get anything. Thanks!

Patricia

Patricia Report 19 Oct 2003 20:32

There is a Whitehall Road in Handsworth, I think this is probably your Whitehall road because Handsworth is very close to the Jewellery Quater, where all silversmiths and jobbing jewellerys traded from.

Amanda Report 19 Oct 2003 20:24

Helena, do you know that road at all? Are there any factories on it? Any silversmiths? I've looked up a map for it but there aren't any places on it, just roads around it. Thanks for looking for me!
