I did look on the 1901 census. Only 2 Grosvenor Clarke, my great grandfather was Grosvenor Ashfird clarke, so got no way of confirming if either are him, what i need to find is a marriage but are having no luck. It may be the case that my great grandmother just took his name and they never actually married, who knows, I have searched the gro references and can find nothing by her name. Also there is the possibility she had a name change. To search for a marriage by the surname Clarke would just take forever. I am really stuck now on how I am ever gonna find them. :o(

Hi My grandfather was born in 1892 - similar age. He fought throughour WW1 but not in WW2. I suspect at about 45, your rellie would have been too old, especially if not already in the forces Sylvie

WW1 consciption (Jan1916) all unmarried men between ages of 18 and 41. In May 1916 this was extended to men of same age regardless of marital status. Cetain jobs were exempt (especially those who worked on the land) altough towards the end of the was losses were so heavy even this was revoked and many were called up. Not too sure about ww2 but probably similar.( It was seen as cowardice to apply as a conscientious objector and it often brought great shame on the whole family.) Hope this helps .Penny

My grandfather was born in 1924, his father at time of birth was a Theatre Stage Manager would I gather which make his father at least 30, but I have not way of confirming this, I have been unable to locate a birth for my grandfathers father birth or his marriage. What is the likelihood that he would of had to fight in World War 1 of 2. Thanks
