I don't know about parish registers, but in my local library I have found pages torn out of Kelly's Directories, Index for Census etc etc. They (the librarians) keep the cupboard locked to safeguard the books and records, but still some shameless vandals can't keep their sticky fingers off - must be genealogists, who else would want to look?. It's appalling - Disgusted of Nottingham (Jacqui)

Tearing pages out of the registers? Sacrilege (sp) There is always one who spoils it for everyone else.

Shirley We asked as I said about 15 years ago, I will see if the system has changed, but then they were still at the church and they refused to let anyone look at them except this one woman who they trusted. Apparently, people were tearing pages out of the registers. Unless we can see them for ourselves we won't try again as the results were pathetic to say the least. Margaret

Hello Andy The Borthwick Institute holds some parish registers for North Yorkshire St Antony's Hall Peasholme Green York 01904-642315. Open Mon - Fri 9.30-4.45 you usually have to make an appointment to look at films. Margaret I have just given them a ring for information for myself and asked about St George Walmgate RC Records I am afraid they don't hold them there. Maybe if you could get in touch with the church they could tell you where they are. Regards Shirley

Margaret, From personal experience, I don't know where these particular registers would be, although I would have thought they would be in York somewhere. Had a look on the website that I referred to but couldn't see any mention of that particular parish. Sorry. Andy.

Andy I need York (the city of). Problem, Roman Catholic. About 15 years ago we enquired about looking at them and they would only let some old woman from the parish do them for us for a fee. She made such a bad job of it. Typing was really bad. Have you any idea if these registers have been deposited anywhere yet? Would they be in York? The one I need is St George RC in Walmgate, York. For those of you with Yorkshire ancestors, you may be interested to know that the Yorkshire Archaelogical Society have a new website where copies of the Parish Registers in microfiche form can be purchased. Not all parishes are listed so you may be out of luck if you are interested. Anyway, just thought I'd pass it on. The link is as follows: http://www(.)yorkshireparishregisters(.)com
