Thanks to all that responded to my question and looked stuff up. I don't know what I'm going to do now because I live in the States and don't plan on going home for another year or two and I certainly haven't planned a trip to Isle of Man so unless I can find it on line I will have a brickwall for a while still. Can anyone give this a quick look up next time they are in Douglas?? I am looking for Catherine Christian who was born in 1851 (ish), she was 40 on the 1891 census which was taken in April 1891. She married a William Teare quite possibly from IOM also but I don't know for sure. The 1891 census shows that the eldest boy(still living at home) was 15 and a coal miner, so yes Margaret. it would not surprise me if William turned out to be a miner too. Was there ever a census taken of a workplace? The oldest 3 children were born in Cleator Moor, Cumberland and the youngest 4 were all born on IOM according to the census. The Manx born children are Eleanor Margaret Teare c1881 (my great grandmother), Richard H. Teare c1883, Evan Teare c1885 and Florence C. Teare c1889. I have scoured the 1837online to find a marriage but to no avail. Does anyone have any other suggestions? As always, deeply in your debt. Tracey

Hi Tracey, I had a look at the 1891 copy and my theory is - She was asked who was the head to the household, said William and then was told it had to be who was the head that night. Was he also a Coal Miner like his son? Maybe he was out at work and somehow missed the Census? Regards Margaret

Got this from genuki Civil registration of marriages started in 1849, of births and deaths in 1878. The records are at the General Registry, Finch Road, Douglas, Isle of Man. And from 1837 help page Please note that this is a full set of the publicly available records for England and Wales. There are no known omissions. These indexes do not cover Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands. Not much help to you am I

Can't see why IOM wouldn't be on 1837. Nudging as someone else must have tail-less rellies... Maz. XX

My gg grandmother was born on the Isle of Man. Will this info show up on 1837 online? I have found her and the children on the 1891 census living in Cumberland but it shows that she and some of the children were born on Isle of Man. Help! Also, any clues as to why on the 1891 census it would have her husbands name with a line through it and her name above it as head of household? I was originally searching for William Teare who married Catherine (Christian). Help would most appreciated.
