I looked at the 1861 census for my family yesterday and found my 2xGGrandad aged 9 down as son-in-law so I think those mistakes happen on every census,it seems people wrote down their own ideas on what people are called. I also had a 10 month baby as employment undefined!!

Hi April, I don't think you will find it on-line. I was looking at one as our Central Library yesterday. Maybe the local Family History society might have a copy too. On which site can i look at the original copy of the 1881 census, i have found several mistakes this afternoon on information from familysearch 1881, which i am finding worring cos i'll have to double check all the information i already had. Many thanks April.

I would have thought they were step daughters. Seems odd for the 1881, as I have some from there with step daughter actually stated, but it probably depended on the knowledge of the enumerator

In the 1881 census i have 2 girls aged 7 and 5 both put down as daughter in laws to the head of household, do you think they would have been his step daughters, as they both have the mothers previous name.
