Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 26 Oct 2003 18:13

1841 - 1891 can be seen on film at the FRC. 1881 also on LDS website. 1891 on Ancestry website. 1901 online and on screen at the FRC. Also you can view them at any Mormon Family History Centre. Each county keeps their own at the County Record Office. Some main libraries have it on Fiche. Can anyone think what I have forgotten?? Maz. XX

Thanks! My next question, of course, is are they all accessible and where?!

Up to and including 1831 the census was a simple head count. 1841 was the first to include names ages etc. Bob

Some kind soul gave me the following information when I wanted to know about Census. 10 March 1801 27 May 1811 28 May 1821 30 May 1831 06 June 1841* 30 March 1851 07 April 1861 02 April 1871 03 April 1881 05 April 1891 31 March 1901 02 April 1911 * "Apparently people were rounded off to next 5 years i.e 41 years old was put down as 40 or 45 so beware!! However, this was also NOT always the case". Hope this helps.

I think 1841 was the first comprehensive one and I think they were taken every ten years, though one got lost in a fire. One useful thing that has helped me is the dates they were taken 1841 7 June 1851 30 March 1861 7 April 1871 2 April 1881 3 April 1891 5 April perhaps some kind soul has info on the later census?

I'm sure this question has probably been asked before... but can anyone tell me when the first census was taken in England and have they consistently been taken every 10 years ever since?
