My grandad, Irwin Uscroft, is 86 and his memory is failing him a bit. But he was able to tell me that his dad was called James and that James had a brother, Mark, and a sister whose name escaped him. They used to work on a farm in North Cave, Howden, East Yorks but came to Hull to work on the docks. So I thought I'd start by looking on the 1901 census and put a search in for Uscroft, Male age 25 +/- 50 years - no result. So did the same for Female and came up with Florence, Age 20, Born Yorkshire Howden, Living in the Civil Parish of Sculcoates, Kingston Upon Hull. So where are her brothers? And more to the point, where are her parents? She can't have come from nowhere! On Yorkshire BMD for the years 1902 to 1949 there are 21 Uscrofts (none before), 5 of which I know are related to me, 1 possibly related and my mum is missing! I realise that it is not fully transcribed yet and there may be more. I'm thinking that some of these may have been Marks children and subsequent offspring. Maybe even Florence's if they were illegitimate! I have also found both marriages for my g grandfather James on Yorkshire BMD (none for Mark or Florence). So was Uscroft mistranscribed and then they decided to keep it? Were their parents dead? Any suggestions and help greatfully accepted. Jeanette

Hi Rosemary I haven't looked yet to see who's living with Florence as funds are a bit tight until the end of the week! I'll certainly be buying some credits then as I have others to look up too. It's good to know that there are some other Uscrofts around. Is there any more information such as an address or places of birth? Regards Jeanette

Thanks for your help Rosemary. I'll print this off then carry on my search when my bank balance is looking healthier! Jeanette

Hi Jeanette; I don't know if either of these entries are of any use to you but thought I would send them anyway. Interestingly, the Uscroft records are listed under the A section with Ashcroft, so there is a possibility of transcriber errors when you are doing searches. There are plenty of Huscrofts in Yorkshire on 1881 but can't find any further East than Doncaster. Seems to be more of a West Yorks name.

Sorry for the delay in replying folks. I fell asleep on the sofa while waiting for my daughter to get off the internet! Rosemary - where did you find the Uscrofts on the LDS? I was only able to come up with Ascroft and Ashcroft when I put a search in. Ruth - yes I did try Huscroft but none seemed to match what I know. Teresa - where did you find these? Crista - both the marriage and death are very interesting. Will certainly be bearing of those in mind. I did see the Oscroft on 1901 and wonder. But as I believe my James wasn't actually born in Hull I think I might have to rule it out (although not completely). Stephen - thanks for looking on the 1861 for me. Looks like it may have been one of these names that changed then according to who wrote it down. I suppose my next step then would be to order one of James' marriage certs to see if his fathers name is on it and his occupation. Thanks All Jeanette

Jeanette, Searching for Oscrofts born in Hull produces 0 results on FreeBMD. Makes me think Oscroft is a spelling mistake. Especially as there is a marriage for a James Uscroft in Hull not long after the census. Crista

Crista Good thinking. I see what you mean. Lets throw them back into the melting pot then! Is the marriage you refer to not long after the census the one for James in 1902 in Hull? I believe this to be one of my g grandfathers marriages although I'm not sure which of the ladies he married. My Grandad was the product of his second marriage to Mary Hale in 1913. I can feel a certificate fest coming on! Jeanette:-)

Jeanette, I think that isn't your family and they really are Oscrofts. I can find them all in Sculcoates on FreeBMD. False alarm. Crista

Yup, that's the one Crista. He had 3 children from this marriage - Florence, William and Frederick. I can't find William on Yorkshire BMD but there is a Robert W. Maybe he was known by his second name. Then when he married Mary in 1913 they had my Grandad, Irwin, and Lilian. Jeanette

Jeanette, North Cave is very close to the Sculcoates district. Crista

Yes it is. I still live in the area - not very adventurous my lot! North Cave is about 14 miles from Hull and I live somewhere in between. Back in those days North Cave wouldn't have been much more than a hamlet I wouldn't think as it isn't a particularly big village these days. I'm just thinking if I go to the records office for Howden District and search the 1891 census I may come across some Uscrofts. Did they have electoral registers in those days? Jeanette

Thanks for that Teresa. Newton Kyme is very close to Tadcaster where Rosemary found some other Uscrofts so maybe I'll need to search in that area. Jeanette
