On windows XP, if you have several users you can switch user easily by pressing the windows key (usually next to alt) and L at the same time. This doesnt close your programs

Bob, Just want to say that the first tip is a bit risky. The Windows Messenger Service can be used by your printer, anti-virus software and uninterruptible power supply to relay messages. You're better off using your firewall to stop these pop-ups. Crista

If you always go to GC first you can make it your "home" page Go to Start > control panel > internet properties Change the home addy to http://www.genesconnected(.)co.uk

Not a windows problem but a GC limitation to stop us advertising URLs You only have problems with . when it's followed by c&o so an addy like this can be entered normally: http://www.genealogylinks.net/ but this one will not: www.heaven4me www.heaven4me(.)com/geneology.html

You can get rid of all these annoying pop-ups if you reset one of Windows defaults (Only in XP) (See also Crista's note below) With my setup (HP printer/Norton, but no UPS) it hasn't caused me problems. Just go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services Right click on Messenger (this is nothing to do with windows messenger), left click properties. Set startup type to disabled. Click OK

I have picked up a few tips along the way for making Windows work better. No doubt others could add some more.
