finding vicars

John Report 28 Oct 2003 20:11

About 40 years ago when I was not into ancestry, an aged relative told me a relation was once vicar of Brighton (St Nicholas Church) Having now found my Ggm was christened and married there, I went to the church to look for a list of previous incumbents. This was not on display. Any ideas where I might find out the names of the vicars? ( I could kick myself for not being more interested then !) John

A great-uncle of mine was an archdeacon and I found his info in Crockford's Directory. This might not help you though. Why not write to the church and ask. I intend to do this with with some of my relative's former parishes - to get anecdotes about him. Normally photos are taken of ministers, so ask about that too!

If the church in question is CofE, then contact the Diocesan Office and they should have complete records of each imcumbant (minister) for each church. Not too sure about the Catholic Church but doubtless there must be a similar system (although I do believe that Catholic Priests moved around far more frequently than their CofE equivalants). Jacqui

Depending on what time we are talking about, you may find a mention of the vicar on the University of Leicester directories site. Some of the old directories listed notable people of the parish.
