I've been trying to find family names on the cencus boards but it would appear that none of my ancesters existed in 1901, where are they? I have my Grandparents names but no dates of birth, where do I go from here to find out their DOB and place of birth I am new to this so please excuse my ignorance.

Hi Cherryl I would suggest you try and find their marriage certificate. On it will be her maiden name, his name, both their fathers name and their ages. From this you can look them up on the census as either single or married people. Jane

Try the FreeBMD site - go to the "resource centre" board and the link is on there. Look for your grandparents to see if you can find a birth or a marriage. With marriages, look for one name. When you find a possibility, click on the page number and it will show a list of 4 people that got married on that day. Check this for the name of the other one. If they are both there, it is almost certainly the right one. Also try the 1881 - again the link is in the resource centre - as this site gives you whole households and is a great help. Failing this, post the names and places of birth on here and we will all pitch in and see if we can get you started. We are a great bunch and all help each other out so don't be afraid to ask. Hi Cherryl, BMD is good but may not come close enough to the present to find your grandparents. I know my Gran was born in June 1904, but she's not on their database. If you know approximately when their first child was born, you could either go to the local records office or use the 1837 website (good, but frustrating and sneakily expensive) and look up their marriage. Once you get back beyond 1890 it gets easier (for a while)Good luck Maggie
