I think i was especially lucky as my gran was not born until 1919 and I didnt know if they would give me any information,I didnt know if that 100 yr rule applied ,like it does for the census. Now my problem is tracing Gran after she left the workhouse as it says her mum was admitted to a lunatic Asylum a few months later!! I have just emailed them back so fingers crossed they might be able to give me some more info!! Anna

No need to apologise for "waffling" - that's a great tip. I have just found out about a couple of my family that were in the workhouse and I think I will give this tip of yours a try. I have looked at the 1901 census for the details but they are worse than useless - just name and age. Place of birth "unknown", job description "undefined" - well, that's a fat lot of help huh?! So, thanks for that.

I had found out my nan was born in a workhouse in 1919.As there was no fathers name on the certificate,i thought i would never find out any details of her background.I emailed cumbria records office last night on the offchance that they might tell me how to look for nans details and those of her mum.I have this morning received an email stating the date my nan was born, and confirmation that she was actually born in a workhouse and also her mums DOB and the date her mum was discharged and where she was discharged to.I never expected this much help.So if any one needs to know the admission and discharge records of some one in their family,It might be worth emailing the Record office where they were living. I can now ring my dad and tell him all of this as he was very excited when i said i had a lead!! Anna :-)
