Hi All, I did not say I have now reched my 9th Great granparents on the longest line. This was merging with a tree on this site., so I can not claim all the work was mine. On my family name I have reached 1795 for my 3rd Great grandfather who was baptised on the 1st march, my birthday! I have been lucky in that most of the lines are in Essex and i live in North Weald, not far from you elaine. Thanks to evryone who has helped on this site. keep up the good work. Bob

With the help of some distant relatives, I've managed to get my own surname back to roughly 1727. I'm hoping that once I've found myself a job, I can devote some of my free time to looking at parish records.

My Vaus/Vaux line goes back to 1748 -- can't find a birth certificate for him -- think he's the ancestor who came from France (since he used both spellings). Had fun researching that line, as the family name was handed down -- four William Vaus' in a row. If I can find proof of where my Mumford ancestor was born (I'm 99% sure), I can add another 113 years as I will be able to merge another family tree with mine -- which would mean 1713.

Hi, It's possible to get back to the mid 1500s using parish records, I've done this on several of my lines. Before that you need wills, Manor books, guilds etc. Gwynne

Hi Robert I have family going back to the mid 1600s. I think it is possible to go back to post reformation in most areas, but before the reformation documents were largely lost due to the disolution of the monasteries. Some do still exist though. I am sure there are other old sources, but as yet I am not familiar with them, as I havn't had to research them! Regards Maxine

My gx5 grandfather was born in 1758, but I have other family going back to the 1600's If anyone is tracing the Worral family of the Wirral? I was given a letter earlier this year that was written by a gentleman in search of my family that set out his Worral research. He had written the letter in 1989 but I replied anyway. Sadly I was just too late as he had passed away at the turn of the year. I have managed to prove a lot of what was in the letter which takes my tree back to 1680. A lot of them were buried in the same cemetery which made life a lot easier! Found my welsh rellies back to the mid 1700's as well. Again they all stayed together so looking at memorial inscriptions and then comparing census returns is really helpful. Also I found a website that had parish records that showed the baptisms of a huge swathe of those I was chasing. Its fantastic when you strike lucky like that.

On the name I have done most of my research on,I have got back to 1760,mum had already had all the family details back until 1850 anyway, so I just had to double check them. Thats on my maternal grandfathers side. On all the other branches,I am not doing as well, but am getting there slowly,I have started adding more branches onto the family mum had details of and i am finding more names all the time.I have been doing this since about may and I am totally hooked. I have also had a lot of help from people on this site, with older census records and also from people looking on ancestry for me. So thanks everyone!! Anna

what is the furthest back you have reached so far. With the help of this site I have now reched the 1620s on one line. Also what is the limit? Bob
