Like a census of old businesses or an old fashioned yellow pages type of thing?! I'd love to look up my g grandfathers business if there is!

Ian, I've noticed that a number of the county GENUKI sites include links to old business directories. Where was your ggrandfathers business located?

A watchmaker and Jeweller- owned by my g grandfather Albert Enderby. He was a watchmaker all of his worknig life, but as far as i know, no family took over from him, and ive tried researching for the address of his shop (69 Haydn Rd, nottingham- i have an envelope that customers jewellery etc went in) and although there are many shops on Haydn Rd nowadays, no. 69 is remaining elusive!

Have had a quick look and can't see any business directories listed - but http://www(.)rootsweb(.)com/~engntt/ looks a useful site.

Hiya Take a look at this website www(.)historicaldirectories(.)org Do you know what years his shop was at this address?I looked at the Wright Directory online from this website but the only person I found at no 69 Haydn Rd was a William Taylor and it doesnt say what kind of a shop this was(this directory was for the years 1913-1914)

Im not sure, but with a bit of logic, i should be able to get a rough idea! He was a watch makers apprentice @ 16 (1901), so if he was born in 1885, presuming that he retired at 65 (is that retirement age?!) he would have the shop upto about 1950. But would he have fought in WWI - he would've been 29 in 1914, so i wonder what happened to the shop during th is time? His brother was killed in action, let me just check when........1917/ 1918. Im pretty certain that he would've returned to his shop after the war. Sorry i've babbled on, but at least i've arranged my thoughts!! Nicola

The trade Directories I looked at only seemed to go up to 1914.I cant seem to find any later ones However,I looked on the royal mail site, typed in the address 69 Haydn Rd notts and it came back with a postcode,so the address is still there at least! Address label result 69 Haydn Road NOTTINGHAM NG5 2LA

Ian Someone told me that if you contact the PO they will give you details of an old address and who was there. Have you tried Kelly's Directories? There is a Watchmaker's Guild which has a directory - apparently you have to subscribe or pay to view. I'm not too sure, but I found a twig who was a watchmaker and is listed in it. Unfortunately I can't get at him!!!! I'll try to find the site and report back. Sue
