Hi there, I am not absolutely certain but I think that the age of death did not appear on the death certificates until 1866. Unless you have a very unusual name, then I think the burial records are your best option before this date. Mary

Hi Andrea, It is the age at death, as given by the informant. So it will only be as reliable as the person who gave the information. Have to be a bit flexible as with most other things genealogical!! Debbie

From experience of certificates received, the age at death. Thye have only started doing this recently. I've a feeling there is a note about this somewhere in the blurb. It is sad when you read names and there is a '0' in the deaths section, and when you find a birth and a death registered in the same quarter too. Hazel

Yes It will be an age.I have just finished transcribing a page of deaths for FreeBMD and they had ages on.I cant remember what year they started putting the age on though. Anna

This is probably his age at time of death. Find the entry again, scroll back to the top of the list and read the headings. That will help you. Jan.

I have just looked up a death on FreeBMD and the result showed:- Webster James 70 Blackburn 8e 370. I am a transcriber for FreeBMD but have never done any deaths so far. Can someone please tell me what the 70 is for - was that his age when he died or what? This number isn't normally there on the births.
