The George on 1837 may not be the one you want. Not all births were registered, especially the earlier ones pre the 1860s. What year do you think he was born?

Hi Sandra, Beaminster is in Dorset. Way to the east of Axminster. As to the Railways, they were growing throughout the 19th century. In 1890 they had progressed so far that the London Underground was already in use. Jim

I have George Hallett on 1881 as born in Exeter, but only birth record for correct age on 1837 is recorded in Beaminster. I know info on census returns is not always reliable, but can anybody tell me if Beaminster is near or far from Exeter. 1881 return has George as Plate Layer which we assume is something to do with railways. Could metalworking have brought George from rural Devon/Dorset to rural Gloucestershire? When did railway building really take off in a big way?
