I just read a message concerning 'cemsearch' which holds a database for Burnley, etc and wondered if one exists for London. If there isn't, how does one find out where ancestors are buried? Do you have to try all burial grounds in the area where the death was registered and hope you come up trumps? Thanx Aileen

Hi Aileen, You could try www(.)chriswillis(.)freeserve(.)co(.)uk - there is a link to victorian cemetries in London, other than that try typing in London cemetries and see what comes up. Good Luck Gen

Me again, if you enquire at the local council office about cemetries in the area you are searching they will be able to tell where the records are held, I have had quite a bit of luck with phone calls, most of the staff are very helpful and if you have a date of death at least you can narrow the search. You will probably find that not many cemeteries have computerised records - purely a matter of resources I think. However I have a book called Greater London Cemeteries and Crematoria, which lists them all with contact details for the current location of registers. I am more than happy to do look ups, or you can obtain the book from the Society of Genealogists Tel 0207 251 8799 http://www(.)sog(.)org(.)uk price £4.95. Hope this helps. Maz. XX
