Hi Deborah There are some books at Kew, on the top floor, with lists of peoples names. You can then get the reference number and view the document. However, not everyone has been down the official route and seem to call themselves what they like. Also you can change your name by deed poll on the Internet!!! Regards, Sue

I assure you that you used to have to go to court and have your new name sworn in by the judge using the bible. Court records are what you need.

Roger is right, these days if you change your name, you only have to attend a solicitor's office and have the paper signed and witnessed.(I did this in August this year because I changed my christian name) I don't know if it would have been so simple years ago, they may have attended a court then.

To change your name by deedpoll you have to attend court and swear to the judge, so by tracing the local court you could see if they hold any records. hope that helps.

Has anyone else had anyone in their tree who has changed their name by deed poll . My Grandfather was born Robert Steele Makepeace Carter with Carter being his mothers surname. At some point he became Robert Makepeace Steele , which I have been told was his fathers name although I have no proof. How do I go about checking if he officially changed his name . Any help would be appreciated. Debbie
