Helen in Kent Report 10 Nov 2003 15:04

Keith, Thank-you again for looking for me. The mother's name is right but not the father's: however, your reply gave me an idea and I have now looked at the parents of every single Pegg on cwgc to see if they match - nope! The only ones left are the Peggs who have 'unknown against them. I think I am going to have to request a rather open death search at the GRO to see if they can match George to the parents. Actually, thinking about it, I suppose 1837 online should have the death, or is that only UK?

Eleanor, Thanks, I'm going to look at them all.

Hi Helen. Keith again. I may have found your man - on CWGC as John Arthur Pegg but the parents names look right. Keith

Hi Helen I typed Sherwood Forresters into my Yahoo search engine and it threw up over 5,000 links! I added George Pegg and it gave me the one you've already found. But there are so many sites connected with the regiment you'll definitely find him on there somewhere. You could try some of the folowing sites: www(.)regiments(.)org www(.)wfrmuseum(.)org(.)uk(.)/sf_museum(.)htm www(.)1914-1916(.)net/notts(.)htm www(.)crich-memorial(.)org(.)uk Hope this helps! Hello Stan, thanks for your comments. George's father died long before so there was a stepfather, surname Bailey. Am going to get the marriage certificate to see if his 1st name was John. The address that George's mother lived at was the same until several decades later when she died so that would still have been the family home, not the one listed on cwgc. I can see this is going to be a long search! I'm interested in what you have said about errors because this is beginning to look more and more likely!

i found my great uncle on this site, but it did'nt give his parents names!!how do i find there names?

Stan

Stan Report 9 Nov 2003 18:45

Hi, Helen The site dealing with corrections to the CWGC site says that the Commission used optical character recognition software to create their records, and that it was not up to the job. So errors are definitely possible. May I suggest, though, that you check on the births of the two possible candidates? If you have the name, address and parents from a Census, there were often errors in ages, and of course they could have moved from the address. Maybe you would need to check business directories or even electoral rolls to see if the father still had the business, or had moved or died. Best wishes Stan

Hello, Pam, Just been speaking to my father who says no-one in his family ever had a second name until our generation, and he's certainly right about that! He says no to Francis. So this theoretically leaves me George with the wrong parents, wrong age and wrong address. The regiment might be the right one - ie a later number. For this to be my George the mistakes would have to be: Ellen Pegg miswritten as Emma (possible???) his father was dead but was Alfred, not John -could John be stepfather? but should be Bailey, and George was a couple of years older in 1916 than this person. It just seems like too many differences. Also, the address is wrong so if George had married and left home shouldn't his wife had been mentioned? Help!!!!!

Helen, My grandfather is listed on the 1901 census as Ned and even my mother was insistent that his name was Edward but I have just got his birth certificate and his name was registered as Thomas Edward..............Pam

Hi, Jackie, I was thinking about George today! Thanks for your suggestion; I saw Francis George Pegg but to be honest I don't really think it's him because because on the 1901 census he is just George and no-one has ever referred to him as anything else. However I'm going to check with my father again, just in case. Many thanks. I'll let you know if there's any progress!

Hi Helen Just browsing and came across your message re. George Pegg missing from War Graves site. Could his name have been Francis George Pegg? Have found this: Francis George Pegg Private 2nd Bn. Sherwood Foresters Notts & Derby Regt. Died 16th Sept 1916 Service No. 12416 Remembered with Honour - Thiepval Memorial. Can't find any reference to his parents so I was unable to verify. Hope this helps.

Sue at LV Thanks for the posting about the web-site for mistakes at the CWGC. My grandad's eldest brother isn't remembered (apart his home town of Tamworth). I emailed the CWGC direct and said that they haven't listed him and they replied that they're not sure why. I need to find his service record and death certificate to prove that he should be officially remembered. Cheeky lot I think!! This week I was researching through some old local papers on microfilm. His widow had put an entry in the paper for the next four years on the commeration of his death, saying how much she and the children missed him and how he had died a hero etc. It brought tears to my eyes reading it. I'll send the info on my great uncle to them. Hopefully they can help. Thanks again! Postscript: I heard from them today and they're going to try and help me get my great-uncle remembered.

What a lovely lot you are! Carol and Jackie, I have looked at the sites you mentioned which are both very interesting and have some names but not very many and not great-uncle George. They're very good for background info, though. Gwynne, My father says the name is on a memorial in Derby, but heaven knows where; it may well be the PRO at this rate. Sue, I'll see if your site has any more info on it. Keith, you have found the same George as I did. My George was the son of Alfred and Ellen Pegg who ran a pub, the Sir Henry Wilmott Arms, 50, Rivett Street, Derby.Alfred was already dead by the time George was killed. Christine, Thanks, I'll give the site a try. Helen, you star, I'll email you direct later today. Thank-you.

Hello Helen. I have George Pegg, Sherwood Foresters No 20087 died 1916 a 26. Parents were John and Emma Pegg of Derby. Is he the one you found?. What are the parents names you want? Was George his first name?

Jacqui Report 1 Nov 2003 16:14

I do believe that the Sherwood Foresters have their own web site - an ex-army colleague of mine told me there was, but haven't looked for it yet, as wrong Regiment for me. Have you tried to find out about it by searching - I think they also have their own museum - probably based here in Nottingham. Jacqui

Hi Helen Their head office is not that far from me. I could take a walk there on Monday if you wanted me to and make some enquiries etc. Never been inside before, only walked past so it would be an experience for me! E-mail me direct if you think it would be of any help. Best wishes Helen

There is a web site which lists errors on CWGC. I can't remember the name, but will go and investigate. Watch this space! Sue It is www.cwgc(dot)co(dot)uk remove brackets and replace dot The Campaign for War Grave Commemoration. There might be something useful on there.

Guinevere Report 1 Nov 2003 14:02

Hi, You could see if he was commemorated on the War Memorial of his home town. Other than that a trip to the PRO and a delve in the WW1 records seems the best way. Gwynne
