Helen in Kent Report 10 Nov 2003 15:04

Keith, Thank-you again for looking for me. The mother's name is right but not the father's: however, your reply gave me an idea and I have now looked at the parents of every single Pegg on cwgc to see if they match - nope! The only ones left are the Peggs who have 'unknown against them. I think I am going to have to request a rather open death search at the GRO to see if they can match George to the parents. Actually, thinking about it, I suppose 1837 online should have the death, or is that only UK?

Jen Report 10 Nov 2003 17:38

how do you get the parents names off cwgc

Helen in Kent

Helen in Kent Report 10 Nov 2003 20:39

Hi Jen, Not all the people listed have their parents' names on the site - I think it depends on how much informatiion was supplied at the time of death, but could be wrong.

I was on today and yesterday - who are you after?

Keith Report 11 Nov 2003 23:19

Hello Helen - again. Re reading the thread shows if I am not mistaken that the parents would be shown (if at all) as XX and Ellen Bailey.Where did your info about DOB, Regt and date of death come from?. There are 62 Pegg deaths in all forces in all of WW1. I shall lie awake again tonight!! Cheers Keith

Helen in Kent Report 11 Nov 2003 23:38

Hello Keith, again! George was my grandma's brother. I have referenced his d.o.b. from the 1891 and 1901 census. The regiment was courtesy of Grandma, sadly departed, and family stories - it was the local regiment for the local boys, specifically the Notts and Derby. You're right about the surname being Bailey, but as his actual parents were Ellen and Alfred Pegg, prior to Ellen's second marriage, that's what I would expect to see. However as we all know, in this game nothing is set in stone. Are you a local historian, or just planning to be one in the future? At any rate you need more sleep! I am going to look for definite birth record and try for a wildcard death record at the GRO - good thing I'm a millionaire! Maz is hunting for records this weekend and Sian is going to look at the Derby War Memorial for me soon. After that I'm going to forget George was ever born. Ok, I'll be stomping around Somme cemeteries on Booze Cruises. Went to the Agincourt field in July and picnicked on the spot!

Hi Helen - me again, like others can't stop wondering about him- surely if his mum had remarried at the time of his death- the war office would call her ellen bailey, even though she was formerlly ellen pegg?

Helen in Kent Report 12 Nov 2003 08:02

Hello, Monica, it's great that you are all helping delve through this one! Yes,I think they should have her down as Bailey, but, although there are other Peggs on cwgc whose mothers have different surnames to their sons, I have looked at all those who show details and haven't found a George Pegg with Ellen Bailey as his mother. Mind you, I suppose as George was a teenager when his mother remarried, it might be worth looking at all the George Baileys. I'll try that next! Thanks, Helen:))

Keith Report 13 Nov 2003 00:16

Hello Helen. It's the sleepless one again. There are only 2 George Pegg births registered in 87/88. 7b 547 1/4 1887, and 7b 573 2/4 1887. There are only two G Baileys / Sherwood Foresters on CWGC. One Pte age unknown died 1917, one L/Cpl age unknown died 1917, and a G A Pte died 1916 age unknown. Unless your man had added the Alfred in tribute to his father when his mother re-enlisted then you can say he died in 1917. Hope this helps. Aye. Keith

Keith, Thank-you, that's very helpful. I think I shall send for all those certificates regardless. I haven't yet wasted any money on the wrong rellies so I suppose there has to be a first time! But you have really helped to narrow it down so once again thank-you very much. Best wishes, Helen :) XX

Keith, Can't believe you've only got 2 people in your tree!!

Keith

Keith Report 13 Nov 2003 22:39

Hi Helen. I've come on to the board only 2 minutes after you called. Amazing. I've only got 2 people because when I got back about 5 generations I inadvertently entered several children to parents and finished with additional grandparents over and above so to speak. Appeals to GC Admin only resulted in incomprehensible instructions so I wiped the lot and started again. Not done a lot yet this time round, as I keep my main tree on Family Tree Maker. Glad I was of assistance - keep me posted. Aye. Keith

Alfred, Thank-you for replying, good evening! Just come in from a Medieval Evening. George Pegg was born 1887/1888 in Derby, Derbyshire, home adress 50 Rivett Street, Derby, which was the Sir Henry Wilmott Arms pub, apparently. He enlisted I think in 1916 which is when most of the Derby boys signed up. His mother still lived at that address when she died in the early 1930's so I assumethat was his address too as we don't know of any marriage. His birth parents were Ellen and Alfred (died 1899) Pegg; Ellen remarried to become Bailey. Thank you so much for coming to my help.

Hello Gail, looks like Keith has beaten me to it, (he doesn't sleep, you know....) Post another message if you need more help! Alfred, Thank-you very much for your information - your source seems to be a different one - is it one anyone can check in the future? I shall be checking everyone out and ordering certificates and hope for a happy outcome! Many thanks. P.S. I know about the Pals lads - lots of my Accrington family were Pals, poor things.
