Hi Ann I do know what you mean, my Husbands grandmother is one thats bugging me for the last two years. I know when she was born, the names of her parents her fathers occupation, but now find they could have come from Ireland, and thats a big place when you don't know what area they came from. Now would not that be a good idea to set up a board for problem solving. You put down the person or persons that you can't get a handle on, others look at it with a fresh pair of eyes and give some imput as to were you could look next. Just an idea Valerie

Hi there They say like attracks like, I have a aunt who's maiden name was Smith and married a Smith, don't fancy looking for her marriage certificate. Yes Ann, I wish I had not asked but there must be a clue somewere in there to unravel it all. Best of luck Valerie

I have marriage certificates for a female ancestor who did marry twice, and she used her married name (from the first marriage) when she married again. It was kind of funny as she was originally a Thompson, then married a Johnson before marrying a Thompson, so she reclaimed her maiden name! I have seen though two names quoted in the indexes, where presumably one name is the maiden name and the other is the name from a previous marriage.

It was the name "used at the time of marriage" so it can be either the married name or the true maiden name (birthname) Bob

Hi Ann I have two sets of children with different last names but same mother, I will look at dates between the name changes. Have you anything like that to go on? Valerie

My grandmother on my mothers side was married twice. Does anyone know if a second marriage would be listed in the indexes still in a maiden name or her married name? Thanks Valerie
