I am in Plymouth, and my local LDS has the Ireland indices on film. I send to Dublin for certificates and send them euros in cash. Never had a problem with that yet.

Margaret The LDS centre I use in the UK holds the records from 1864 for southern Ireland. They will order in any records they do not have, occasionally there is a small charge. Kathleen

Margaret, The LDS I normaly visit holds microfilms of the indexes, for both North and South. I believe that the same goes for LDS centres in the South of Ireland, but I am not sure. Maybe Theresa from Cork can enlighten us. Paul

Is there a facility like that for Southern Ireland? Regards Margaret

Oops!!!! I forgot to mention that the registration system started in two different phases over here. Non-catholic marriages were recorded from 1845, and all BMD's were recorded from 1864. Paul

Corrected posting Unfortunately, it seems as though you will only get the reference you need over here. Or you could try your local LDS centre. They can be very helpful, and may order in the necessary film(s) for you if you have an idea of the dates. If you know the area, especially in the North, the County Registry Offices can sometimes do a search for you (marriages only, otherwise it is a Belfast or Dublin search). Paul

But where do I get the GRO Reference from?

If you need certs for people in NI for an event prior to 1922 and have a full reference (Year, Qtr, district vol & page), write to GRO in Dublin for a photo-copy of the entry. They only charge €1.90 (euros) and will accept payment by credit card. They don't have 'online' ordering yet, so it may take a little longer but GRONI will charge you £9.00 for exactly the same info!
